Starship | SN9 | High-Altitude Flight Test

On Tuesday, February 2, Starship serial number 9 (SN9) completed SpaceX’s second high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from our site in Cameron County, Texas.
Similar to the high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 8 (SN8), SN9 was powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee - approximately 10 kilometers in altitude. SN9 successfully performed a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.
The Starship prototype descended under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. During the landing flip maneuver, one of the Raptor engines did not relight and caused SN9 to land at high speed and experience a RUD.
These test flights are all about improving our understanding and development of a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

Dear Space X Engineers and Staff. I think what you have accomplished is nothing short of outstanding! I would like to share a thought please if I may. I was wondering if we could alter the landing of the Starship to land in the horizontal position, then utilizing mechanical limbs and or an exoskeleton, right the ship upon landing. I have noticed several anomalies while scouring the video library. Blow back of fuel and gases into the engine cone among other concerning items. I feel the fuel consumption and stress upon the rocket, engines and systems would be significantly reduced with a horizontal landing and a righting of the ship for secondary takeoff. Thank you for allowing me to share Frank.bua@comcast.net

DEAR #yusaku maezawa @yusaku maezawa #elonmusk @elonmusk PLEASE EMPLOY ME OR TAKE ME ON ANY SPACE MISSION. I'VE DREAMED SINCE I WAS A CHILD TO GO TO SPACE. EVERYTHING FROM THE HISTORY, THE ENGINEERING, THE ROCKETS, SPACE CRAFTS, THE SUITES, THE LAUNCH PADS, THE BUILDINGS, THE TECHNOLOGY, THE TRAINING, FEELING ZERO G, JUST ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ABOUT SPACE AMAZES ME. I spend every night watching hours of videos on you tube on all the above I just stated. It fascinates me and is just the most amazing thing imaginable. IVE signed up for every space competition imaginable, I donated to St.Judes to try and win, Ive prayed to be able to fly to and spend time on the ISS. About me: I come from a very poor background and I've had many obstacles to overcome in my life but I have not let it overcome me I let it make me! I love everyone and anyone who knows me would tell you that I would give you the shirt off my back and I would do anything to make you smile no matter what! I believe anything is achievable if you put your mind to it and people like you both prove that everyday and continue to push the envelope and show us all that anything is possible. I don't even know if y'all will ever even read my comments I have posted on many of your social media but if for some chance you do please at least give me a shot at doing something as incredible as y'all both have. I try to to make the world a more beautiful place every day and try and make people love each other as much as possible. Alone we are small but together we are larger than life and we can achieve anything. My wife and my children support my love with space and know that it is my dream to fly aboard a space shuttle and to one day arrive and spend time on the ISS or some other space facility in the future. Just like everyone else I work hard everyday dreaming of the American dream of being successful and Rich so I too could fulfill my space curiosity and bless those who are less fortunate because I know personally what it is like to dream your entire life and hoping every day for your dreams to come true. I'll continue to push myself and work hard and at least enjoy my space ISdowns videos and tell you both I think you're both amazing awesome people and doing amazing things that must be done to push us further then we ever have been before. I would love to work for one of you and to be able to have full access and explore the facilities and Technologies you have both created what a dream that would be!!

WRONG approach procedure DESIGN, is what we really saw here. The 2 engines RESTART needs to happen SOONER in the descent, HIGHER, and it needs to be with THREE ENGINES, NOT TWO, WHICH means a more stable and reliable power source is needed. SO, IN ANY CASE, RESTART HIGHER UP AND WITH AT LEAST THE SAME NUMBER OF ENGINES AS IT TAKES TO TAKE OFF, or in any case the same power available (per weight, of course). It takes MORE POWER to safely decelerate THAN to safely leave ground. Re-design !

I say they need a more stable re-light, spaceX knows it; and they need more time to relight safely, hence they need to relight sooner, higher up, with more engines and more power available. SpaceX knows more time adds time for more safety but they will see if they can make it with the bare minimum of time and only add more reliability. My opinion here is that the latter priority is unethical.

Eyy. Only reason we got to the Moon is because a pile of shit exploded on or around the launchpad. I have faith. It goes up, now just gotta work on going back down again. Honestly it's impressive how far SpaceX's reusable tech has come. When they finally have the thing behaving itself, I'd ride it. Humanity's greatest accomplishments are stories of failing upwards spectacularly until that one time it all works. Showing all of this, complete disclosure, and even going as far as that rather humorous failure compilation, engenders trust. When it finally does its job, we'll know how much effort was put behind it to get it there.

Seems like those engines are not reliable. By two launches, they would have a 50-50% chance of not lighting up. So if we use three engines and shut up the failed one, still that leaves the probability of 67% of landing correctly with 3 engines. Now if they have say 7 engines, still the fundamental problem remains- they are not reliable when starting. Imagine taking all costly payload to Mars and the mission would fail only because those engines couldn't function reliably.

    • TimePro

@Jack Whitlock also, merlin engines are 99% reliable and having multiple engines do help, but raptor is made to do multiple flights in a short period of time without refirbishment. They got to ensure that the engines fire at the right moment and not too late

    • Saurabh Chandra
      Saurabh Chandra

@Jack Whitlockif not being able to fire up at the right moment isn't a measure of reliability, I don't know what is. They should improve their engines first.
